if guns don’t kill
but people do
then americans
must be the worst kind

and if the problem
is not
bullets
but hearts
americans
must have the worst types

forty five
mass shootings
in one month
is a small price to pay
for freedom

we bear arms
and the weight
of dead bodies
we form militias
and safety plans
we protect our rights
with amendments
and our children
with bullet proof backpacks

god bless
the land of the brave
who buy milk
in walmarts
and war zones

guns that explode bones
and disembowel
are fun to shoot
and animals are fun
to eat
and humans are fun
to bury
we are all
having
a blast

and it’s too soon
to talk about
danger
and morality
when there are so many
gravestones to
carve

my daughter
asked about school
next year
and i cried

because kindergarteners
shouldn’t know
how to be quiet in closets
or lock classroom doors
or think about murder
but then again
constitutions
aren’t written
for children
