This is only the second poem I’ve ever put a content warning on. Graphic violence. This is dedicated to Ted Cruz, who said America is the safest country in the world and believes that it is our inalienable right to own weapons that obliterate organs and leave orange-sized holes in child-sized bodies.
an orange a day keeps the doctor away unless you’re in fourth grade when the coroner sees how in tact you’ll be before needing dad’s dna an orange a day is a wonderful thing it’s healthy and sweet and good unless you are nine and ran out of time to hide under desks made of wood an orange a day but if you can’t find one a bullet might do the trick because ar-15s are perfect machines to leave holes nice and thick an orange a day an apple or fist or something else just as round when shooting kids through a graze just won’t do they’ve got to stay on the ground an orange a day or maybe nineteen we’ve got so many to give don’t mess with texas our freedom’s infectious the safest place ever to live #poemsfortheresistance
This is staggering. To have to identify people through DNA because their humanity has been obliterated....
Thank you for writing this, Kaitlin.
